Areas We Serve: Hampstead

May 7, 2013

Hampstead. Today we are introducing our clients to the fascinating neighbourhoods around our flooring showroom and areas we deliver our flooring services and products to, today we’re exploring Hampstead.

For many of us, Hampstead conjures up one of three images: running across Hampstead Heath with the wind blowing in your hair; the gorgeous millionaires’ mansions lining the streets; or a pub crawl.

Hampstead Village, as it’s fondly known, is not only one of the most affluent areas in London but the whole of the UK. In fact, Hampstead Village has more millionaires within its boundaries than any other area in the United Kingdom. (Don’t worry – you don’t need to be a millionaire to enjoy stunning wood flooring in London!)

Hampstead comes from the Anglo-Saxon words ‘ham’ and ‘stede’, which means ‘homestead’. This ‘homestead’ has a rich cultural past; Keats wrote “Ode to a Nightingale’ in Hampstead. You can even visit his house, aptly named Keats House Museum.

If there’s one thing you simply must do when you’re in Hampstead, it’s a visit to Hampstead Heath. This is London’s largest ancient parkland. For centuries Londoners have been enjoying Hampstead Heath as if it were their own (very large) backyard. Stroll up to the top of Parliament Hill and you can enjoy a legally protected view of the London skyline. You can also take a dip in one of three open-air swimming pools, which used to be reservoirs for drinking water – though we don’t recommend drinking the water these days.

Hampstead is not short of pubs, and they too carry a fascinating history. Notorious highwayman Dick Turpin took refuge in the Spaniard’s Inn. Nestled on Spaniard’s Road, this quaint pub was built in 1585 as a tollgate inn on the Finchley boundary. In fact, it still sits on the boundary of Camden and Barnet today.

If you find yourself in a pub quiz in Hampstead, our final fact might come in very useful: Hampstead tube station is the deepest station on the Underground network.
